Florida Trail, Osceola National Forest |
|
It’s 20.1 miles from the Drew Road trailhead at the northwest end of the Osceola National Forest to the Olustee Battlefield trailhead at the southeast end. In between, there are several access points that make it possible to do much shorter linear or round-trip hikes.
As the forest is a mosaic of pines and bayheads, it is often very wet, and water tends to collect in forest roads that the Florida Trail uses in places. The southeast side of the forest is somewhat drier. Trailhead access points are at:
TRAILHEADS DREW ROAD: Follow US 41 south from White Springs to Lassie Black Road, on the left south of the agricultural check station. Follow this road to US 441. Turn left on US 441 and drive north a little ways to Drew Road on the right. Turn right on Drew Road and follow it to the trailhead on the right. Hike southeast into the forest.
TURKEY RUN: Follow US 41 south from White Springs towards Lake City. After you pass under I-10, turn left on CR 25A. Where it merges into US 441, turn left on CR 250 (Gum Swamp Rd). Follow this road for 10 miles. Just past the junction with CR 250A (Ocean Pond Rd), the trailhead is on the left.
OLUSTEE: Follow US 41 south from White Springs to Lake City. Turn left on US 90. Drive 15 miles east. Turn left into Olustee Battlefield. Make an immediate left into the trailhead after you cross the railroad tracks. Follow the orange blazes west from the trailhead into the tall longleaf pines. |
